When did The Backcountry Swell start?

Mark and Wyatt started The Backcountry Swell in 2019 by prototyping ways to create an affordable, sustainable alternatives to the Surf, Skate and Snowboarding industries. After a year of prototyping, we launched our first product, a Skateboard made from 100% recycled plastic. Since then we have made surf fins, approach skis, stomp pads, powsurfs & more all out of 100% recycled plastic.

What motivated you to start a sustainable sporting goods business?

Our motivations for starting The Backcountry Swell stemmed from a few different areas. First, we were tired of seeing so much plastic pollution in all of our favorite outdoor activities. Second, we were frustrated with the excessive and sometimes prohibiting costs associated with skateboarding, surfing and backcountry snowboarding. As a result of these frustrations we decided to do something about it! We created The Backcountry Swell to provide affordable and sustainable products to our favorite industries.

Where do you get your plastic to recycle?

We source our plastic from a variety of places. Firstly, plastic is collected from beach clean ups across the US. Whatever we can’t collect is supplemented with post consumer bottle caps, post industrial waste and recycled medical grade plastic.

What are some ways I can help?

Help us plan a beach or nature clean up! We love to help as many locations as possible clean their beaches, but our reach is limited. If you know of a good place that could use a good cleaning, reach out to us and help us get a cleanup going!

When will my order ship?

Most orders ship within 2-3 business days. Please allow 5-10 business days for custom orders.

Do you accept custom orders?

Yes! We have done custom orders for skateboards, surf fins, approach skis, powsurfs and more! Whether you are looking for just some approach ski bindings, a certain color of powsurf or whatever you can dream up, we can make it happen! Reach out to us on our contact page to get started.
