Earlier this season, we went snow hunting in the Utah backcountry. After months of shallow conditions around the shop, it was time to get some deep turns in with the new BCS Powsurf 149. @balanced_diet_wyatt_ described his experience like this:
“To be fully honest, this was by far the steepest and most exposed I had ever taken the powsurf, and hiking up was a little spooky. As we closed in on these cliffs after a few hours of hiking, it occurred to me that I was going to have to ride down on this thing strapped to my back.
As we selected our drop in line, the other riders dropped first, some hitting cliffs along the way and cartwheeling down the mountain. My stomach was in knots, but I nervously stepped on and dropped, weaving my way around trees and cliffs. It was all smiles at the end, but I walked away with a new respect for big mountain pow surfing” #shredsustainably

While this argument is usually made for lighter shoes, it turns out its true for skinning too🫡
With some quick weights and maths we figured that using approach skis gives you a weight efficiency gain of 35 lbs.
Having weight on your back means that you’re going to have more energy on your tours and it will feel as if you’re 35 lbs lighter.
So whatcha think? Is our math right? We think so 🤔

When we first started making approach skis in 2021

When we first started making approach skis in 2021, we had someone ask us if they could use their ski boots. Jokingly, we went out and tested that first year, but decided to perfect our snowboard version before moving on.
As we’ve continued to make Approach Skis, people kept asking: “hey, can I use my ski boots with these?”
So many people asked that our response video from 3 years ago still gets a decent amount of hits on YouTube 😂
So, this season we finally decided to do what our customers told us and make approach skis for skiers! They feature a dedicated ski binding and all the great stuff from the snowboard version.
They’re a blast to tour in and let you use whatever boots & skis you already have! #shredsustainably
